Checks

  • Needs work

    Title

Add a title. It's the clickable headline in search results.

  • Needs work

    Meta description

Without one, Google picks a snippet from the page, which may not sell the click.

Why preview your title and description

Your title tag and meta description are your ad in the search results. They don't directly change rankings much, but they decide whether people click. Google truncates titles and descriptions by pixel width, not by a fixed number of characters, so a title with lots of wide letters gets cut sooner than one with narrow letters. This checker measures width the way the results page renders it.

Guidelines the checker uses

  • Title: up to about 580 pixels on desktop (roughly 50–60 characters). Lead with the keyword and the benefit; put your brand at the end.
  • Description: about 920 pixels on desktop (roughly 150–160 characters), less on mobile. Put the key promise in the first half.
  • Keyword: include it naturally. Google bolds words that match the search, which draws the eye.
  • Reason to click: a benefit or call to action (“Get a free quote in 2 minutes”) beats a list of keywords.

Google may rewrite them

Google sometimes shows a different title or snippet when it thinks another part of the page better matches the search. Clear, accurate tags that describe the page honestly are the most likely to be shown as written. For the rest of on-page basics, PageScore's full audit also checks your H1, canonical URL, Open Graph tags and structured data.

Questions

How long should a meta title be?

Aim for 50–60 characters, or under about 580 pixels wide. Titles longer than that are usually cut off with an ellipsis on desktop results.

How long should a meta description be?

Around 120–160 characters works for desktop. Mobile can show less, so put the most important words first.

Do meta descriptions affect rankings?

Not directly. They influence whether people click your result, which is why they're worth writing well.

Why is Google showing a different title?

Google can rewrite titles when the tag is very long, stuffed with keywords, or doesn't match the page content. Keep it accurate, concise and aligned with your H1.
